THE POWER OF THE PUNCH

SHEET metal fabrication is increasingly reliant on Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) laser cutting. Here at Yorkshire Laser we use it extensively for its versatility, accuracy, speed and cost efficiencies.
As a traditional fabricator delivering high quality products to some of the most vulnerable, high value industries in the world including offshore, gas, telecommunications, power generation and medical we’ve embraced laser cutting but not at the cost of every alternative including CNC punching.
CNC punching was the go to choice for companies such as Yorkshire Laser until very recently and we still use it extensively today. Why and what is CNC punching?
CNC punching machines are programmed to move metal in an X or Y direction. This accurately places the metal under the punching ram so the machine can then form a hole or shape in the metal. At the same time CNC punching allows us high tension with very little distortion compared to its CNC laser cutting equivalent.
It means that we can create shapes and holes including:
• Louvres
• Centre punches
• Countersinks
• Embosses
• Knockouts
• Hinge forming
This is important to our customers who need very specific sizes of shapes in enclosures that protect high value products such as oil lines or telecommunications networks against adverse climates.

The benefits to our customers of CNC punching is that we can punch a variety of shapes and holes of various sizes into metal when accuracy and size are vital.
Yorkshire Laser uses an Amada Vipros 368 King CNC punching machine. This is a 30 ton, 58 station hydraulic machine that comes complete with a 1500mm deep throat, programmable ram and a fully brushed table.
It means we can process sheets up to 1500mm wide. With an incredibly high hit rate, perforated parts like grills can be made much cheaper. The CNC punching machine also has the ability to tap formed holes directly on the machine, whilst the programmable ram allows us to form shapes in material with amazing accuracy and consistency.
