Yorkshire Laser achieves BS1090

March 19, 2025

YORKSHIRE Laser’s commitment to achieving the highest standards of quality and safety has resulted in our being awarded BS1090 certification.

This safety conformity mark is essential for structural steelwork and shows that we comply with best practice in the industry. It opens up exciting new opportunities for us within the construction, manufacturing and engineering sectors where absolute quality and safety in terms of structural steelwork is paramount.

Director of Operations Cheryl Reidy, who was part of the cross-functional team responsible for securing the certification, said the journey to BS1090 began with the chance to work with a new customer.

“On the face of it, the work that was required involved a straightforward cut, fold, countersink and paint but several of the pieces of metalwork needed to provide structural support which meant we required BS1090 certification to prove what we produced was structurally sound,” explained Cheryl.

Committed to providing exceptional customer service and going above and beyond to meet customers’ needs, Yorkshire Laser was undaunted by the prospect of achieving this stringent quality and safety certification.

We sought advice on what systems we needed to set up to achieve the certification and followed them to the letter. Each batch of structural steelwork manufactured needs to undergo weight bearing testing and systems needed putting in place to capture data including the code of each individual part and the material used to create it, to provide full traceability.

“It was an intense piece of work carried out over a few weeks by a number of the Yorkshire Laser team from different areas of the business. We needed to put in place and learn new processes to control, identify and account for the parts differently to ensure full traceability for each batch,” outlined Cheryl.

With the systems in place, auditors came to visit but what should have been a two-day audit, was completed in just one.

“They were satisfied with what we’d put in place, so the audit only took a day. There were a few areas for improvement, but we’d implemented these within a couple of days and so were awarded the certification,” Cheryl added.

Yorkshire Laser is now working with the new customer, and we have recently completed the second batch of parts for them.

“We’ve had great feedback from the customer – the quality has improved compared to their previous supplier and the parts we are producing for them look and fit better,” reported Cheryl.

“This is a great result from a fantastic team effort, and we are excited for the doors this could open for Yorkshire Laser in terms of new business. Achieving excellence in quality, innovation and customer service is at the forefront of how we operate at Yorkshire Laser, and I think it is fair to say the team has totally delivered on that here.”
