Mild steel is relatively cheap, easy to work, and very durable, it’s the go to option for the vast majority of enclosures. Mild steel's one weakness is its lack of resistance to corrosion; for this reason it tends to be used predominantly on enclosures that are being sited indoors.
Stainless steel is Ideally suited for use in the most demanding industrial environments and the preferred choice for use in all external settings. 304 grade stainless is effective in all outdoor environments except coastal or if in contact with corrosive chemicals. In these instances, 316 is used instead.Stainless steel enclosures are manufactured to meet the most demanding industrial and hazardous area environmental applications. Stainless steel is the premier choice of enclosure for instrumentation and electrical appliances.
Lightweight and good corrosion-resistance are aluminium’s strengths, however the material’s reduction in hardness compared to steel and stainless steel and the cost of working and finishing it which is higher than steel, mean it’s used primarily where weight is the overriding issue.
